Messi stars, Barca into Champions League last 16

MOSCOW (AP) -- Lionel Messi had his ninth two-goal game of the season, and Barcelona defeated Spartak Moscow 3-0 Tuesday to reach the knockout rounds of the Champions League for the ninth straight season.

With 56 Champions League goals, Messi tied Ruud Van Nisterooy for second in career scoring, trailing only Raul Gonzalez (71).

Messi has 24 goals this season and 80 goals for club and country in 2012, five behind the single-year record set by Gerd Mueller for Bayern Munich and Germany in 1972.

Defender Daniel Alves put Barcelona ahead with a low right-footed shot in the 16th minute. Messi scored off a rebound int the 27th minute, then rounded goalkeeper Andriy Dikan following a pass by Pedro Rodriguez 12 minutes later.

Barcelona (4-1) tops Group G with 12 points and Spartak (1-4) is last with three.
