INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- USA Gymnastics has formed a medical task force to ensure everything possible is being done to prevent and treat injuries.
The task force will review best practices for treatment of concussions and long-bone injuries, as well as examining the responsibilities medical teams have for referrals and follow-up care. A database of health care providers accessible to both elite athletes and local clubs also will be established. USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny says the panel's findings will serve as a "road map."
The six-person task force includes 2008 Olympic captain Alicia Sacramone; longtime USA Gymnastics medical director Dr. Larry Nassar; and Dr. Jay Binder of the Sports Medicine Center and The Bone and Joint Center in Metairie, La. Binder, chair of the task force, has served on the International Gymnastics Federation's medical commission.
