Beef cattle owners have two educational opportunities with the Ohio Beef Web Ex School and the Beef Feedlot School. The OSU Extension beef team is sponsoring a 3-session beef school that will address some current and timely topics related to beef cattle production. The three sessions will be held Tuesday evenings on Jan. 29, Feb. 26 and March 19. The time frame for each evening is 7-9 p.m.
The Jan. 29 session features Lee Leachman, Leachman Cattle Company of Colorado, and Dr. Nevil Speer, Professor of Animal Science at Western Kentucky University. They will discuss the subject "Breeding Considerations in Today's Beef Industry." The Feb. 26 session will focus on the topic of improving the productivity and use of forage resources, both pasture and hay. This topic will be addressed by OSU Extension Educators Chris Penrose from Morgan County and Rory Lewandowski from Wayne County. The March 19 topic is "Enterprises to Preserve Current Beef Infrastructure." Instructors for that session have not yet been announced.
If your interest is in feeding out cattle, consider the beef feedlot school. Francis Fluharty, OSU Ruminant Nutrition Specialist and Researcher at OARDC will be teaching his final beef feedlot school this winter. That school is being made available by distance learning technology and Wayne County Extension will be one of the host locations. All the sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. The dates and topics for the school are:
Jan. 30: Ruminant Digestive Physiology, Rumen Function, Carbohydrates
Feb.13: Protein Digestion and Metabolism, Protein Sources, DDGS
Feb. 20: Receiving and Growing Strategies
Feb. 27: Methodologies to Enhance Marbling and Feed Efficiency
Both beef schools will be held in the Wayne County Administration building located at 428 West Liberty Street in Wooster. Pre-registration is requested to help plan for the number of handouts needed. The cost to attend either the Ohio beef school or the beef feedlot school is $20 per person or per farm. Registration for both schools is requested to the Wayne County Extension office at 330-264-8722 by Friday, Jan. 25. Please include your name, address, phone number and names of any other farm members that will be attending when you register.
