Activities in January keep dairy people busy

The Ohio Holstein Association officers and board members met Friday, Jan. 4, at the office in Wooster. Plans are under way for the Ohio Holstein Association Convention Sale and Annual Meeting to be held Friday, March 8, and Saturday March 9, at Sidney, Ohio. Headquarters for the meeting is the Sidney Inn, located at 400 Folkerth Ave., Sidney, Ohio 45365, phone 937-539-4577.

The Ohio Convention Sale will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. The sale will feature approximately 75 registered Holsteins from Ohio and surrounding states. There will be high genomics, outstanding show cows, show age calves, fresh young cows and bred heifers, all from outstanding cow families.

Following the sale will be a National Holstein Association Regional Meeting at the Sidney Inn. At 7 p.m., the Ohio Holstein Queen Contest will be held. Entries for the queen contest are due Feb. 8. Evening activities will include a dance and pizza party for Juniors and a social gathering for adults.

The Ohio Holstein Association Annual Meeting will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, March 9. The Holstein Women's meeting will be held at 8 a.m. and the Juniors will meet at 9:30 a.m. At noon, there will be an awards luncheon and the Holstein Women's Fun Auction. The Ohio Holstein District 2 Annual Meeting will be held Jan. 19 at noon at the Damascus Friends Church located on Walnut Street, just off Route 62, in Damascus. Reservations are due by Monday, Jan. 14 and should be sent to Suzanne Lora at 330-537-3797 or email lorawae@embarqmail.com. Cost of the meal is $11 for adults and $5.50 for youth 9 and younger.

Consignments are currently being taken for the Buckeye Classic Sales, sponsored by the Buckeye Dairy Club and featuring Holsteins, Ayrshires, Guernseys and Jerseys. It will be held in conjunction with the Ohio Spring Dairy Expo, March 28, 29 and 30, at the Ohio State Fairgrounds at Columbus. The Ohio Jersey Breeders' Association Annual Meeting will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at Der Dutchman in Plain City.

The North Central Ohio Grazing Conference will be held Jan. 24-25, 2013 at the Buckeye Event Center, Dalton.
