There is a magazine that I receive called House Beautiful. It is an interesting magazine. The inside cover of my latest issue featured a picture of a huge white pig. It was an advertisement for kitchen appliances! This magazine advertises all types of items that can be purchased to make your house beautiful --everything from furniture and appliances to wine glasses and ear rings. There is page after page showing different colors and settings in various rooms of the house. The purpose is to encourage you to purchase things that can make your house beautiful and to show how to use them in decorating. But what is it that really makes a house beautiful?
I always thought my Grandpa and Grandma's house was beautiful. It was just an old fashioned six-room house. There was a big, old oak table in Grandma's kitchen. It was so beautiful on holidays covered with its bright tablecloth and filled with delicious food. There would be Grandma's chicken and homemade noodles, mashed potatoes, gravy and all kinds of covered dishes brought by the relatives, homemade bread, graham cracker crme pie and more. The family would gather round, laughing, talking, telling stories and just enjoying the good food and being together. Later on there would be card games for the adults, board games for the older kids and trucks, tractors, blocks and dolls to entertain the littlest ones. If it wasn't a holiday, everyone often got together on a Saturday night. Such good times!
When I was young we often went to visit a certain neighbor family in our area. The mother, Iva, always greeted us with a huge smile and welcomed us in. She would say funny things and laugh out loud with an odd laugh that sounded like a chicken's cackle. She was always going at a trot and seemed so happy! She was a tiny person, not quite five feet tall, as was her twin sister, Neva. The adults often played music or they would sit and visit and share stories and the problems farmers were dealing with. Her girls and I would play hide the thimble or other games. Before you left everyone was always treated to something to drink and a huge piece of her delicious angel food cake made from the cracked eggs that she couldn't sell. An old farm house was made beautiful by the music, fun and laughter in it.
As our children were growing up, we would do the chores a little early on Saturday night and then it was off to our good friends' house. It would be a noisy place, as sometimes other friends came, and there would be lots of kids, laughing, jumping, yelling, and playing! We played cards, drank lots of coffee and soft drinks, ate chips, sandwiches and pizza and had a great time. We would stay late and often there would be sleepy children that we would have to carry to the car. Our friends didn't even own a house, they rented, so every so often we met in a different house. No matter where we got together, it was good times, special friendships and good memories!
There are so many big, beautiful houses in the world today and there are so many things available to buy and place in any house. So many colors, designs, ideas for remodeling, and more. Unfortunately there are so many people in today's world who do not realize that it isn't "things" that make a house beautiful. While there are many different things that can contribute to the way a house looks, it is the life that is lived in it that makes a "house beautiful"!
