Laney Hunsberger, a Triway Junior High student and the daughter of Mike and Janice Hunsberger, was selected as the 2017 Wayne County Junior Dairy Princess during the annual Wayne-Ashland County Dairy Service Unit annual meeting held in Wooster.
Hunsberger is already well-known for her activities in the dairy industry within Wayne County in that she has been a past Wayne County Junior Dairy Princess runner-up, assisting in the various activities of the post. She has been an exhibitor in the Mini Dairy Contest during the fair with her dairy heifers and in the showmanship contests continuing as her participation in the 4-H program increased. She maintains good grades, achieving the honor roll with her school work. She plays basketball, enjoys cooking, gardening and volunteering with the disabled veterans of Wayne County. She submitted her application to the Wayne County Dairy Promoters well before the deadline for submission, including the factual points of her achievements and wishes to promote the values of the dairy industry within the community. Her experiences of helping on the family dairy farm will give her knowledge of the industry as she promotes the dairy industry.
Jewel Persinger, a student at Apple Creek Elementary School and the daughter of Brian and Jen Persinger, will bring her cheerfulness and bright smile to the public as the 2017 Wayne County Junior Dairy Princess runner-up. Her quick wit and flashing smile will be showcased during the years as she performs the various duties of the position. Persinger is a regular assistant on her grandparents' dairy farm near her home where her dairy heifer is housed and shows during the Wayne County Fair Junior Dairy Shows.
She plays volleyball, basketball and softball. Her written application also was submitted to the committee stating her background, her work in the dairy industry, and why she would like to be the Wayne County Junior Dairy Princess.
Each contestant was interviewed by a panel of judges prior to the banquet for the difficult decision of selection. Following the quarter-hour time of questions and answers, Tanya Marty, one of the Dairy Princess coordinators, tallied the judges' scores and held the results in secret until the near conclusion of the annual meeting. It was understood to be another difficult decision between the quality contestants. The judges are undisclosed to the gathering. Flowers for the royal party were provided by CR Blooms. The tiara was provided by the Promoters.
The court was introduced by Marty and each read her application as a portion of the evening's program. The 2016 Princess, Marie Clements, shared words of appreciation and a summary of her experiences during the year. She is the daughter of Renee Surrarrer of West Salem and attends Northwestern High School. She shows dairy in 4-H, is on the FFA Dairy Judging team and enjoys cheerleading and soccer at school. Allison Morlock, the 2016 Junior Dairy Princess, is the daughter of Cory and Amber Morlock of West Salem, is an elementary student of the Northwestern District and works on the family's farms. She was unable to attend the event due to a sudden illness.
The royalty will represent the industry during parades, tours, open houses, fairs and other occasions as approved by the Dairy Promoters and available. Clements will assist the young ladies as she is able in support of the program. The young ladies anticipate attending the July 2017 Dairy Twilight Tour at the Rosedale Farm near Jeromesville this summer.
Continuing a rich tradition of supporting the dairy industry, the Wayne County Dairy Supporters sponsor this contest and present the roll of previous princesses in the program each year. Funding of the program is primarily generated via ice cream sales during the Wayne County Fair.
Members are quick to lend a hand where needed to support the activities of the Dairy Service Unit and the industry and help fund the Mini Showmanship Contest, Dairy Palooza and Skill-a-thon, among other activities. Nancy Wise serves as the president and Mary Ann Marty is the secretary/treasurer with Tanya Marty and Lisa Gress working as the Dairy Princess coordinators.
