BERLIN -- Holmes Center for the Arts offers Saturday morning art workshops at Berlin Mennonite Church on the second Saturday of the month with classes for all ages.
Preschool/Kindergarten paint lab is a hands-on, messy (and fun) art experience. Each class includes several projects and experiments that parents are usually hesitant to try at home. On March 11, children will create raised salt paintings and on April 8, they will have fun with watercolor resist. Paint Lab is from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
For students in grades 1-3, these projects are offered: March 11, "Rainy Day," an oil pastel/watercolor resist of a rainbow in the rain. On April 8, "Painting Birdhouses," students will use tempera paint to make a birdhouse and complete the scene with birds and flowers cut from decorative paper. These classes are from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Students in grades 4-6 can partake in the following activities: March 11, create a Spring Bouquet with oil pastels on black paper and on April 8, celebrate the arrival of spring by painting an apple tree in bloom. This project will be painted with watercolors and the tree will be "drawn" with the aid of a soda straw, lots of fun. Classes are from 11 a.m.-noon.
For teen-adult artists desiring to improve painting skills, learn to paint a bluebird in acrylic paint on canvas board. No previous painting experience is necessary to create this delightful bird. This class is offered March 11 and repeated on April 8. Students desiring to attend both sessions can choose a different bird to paint on April 8. This is a two-hour class from 10 a.m.-noon.
Cost for classes is $12 for the one-hour classes and $20 for the two-hour classes; sign up at holmescenterforthearts.org.
