Clock is ticking for computer's hard drive

I'm typing as fast as I can before the hard drive in my computer crashes. After just having our friend Caleb over here for several hours scrubbing the thing clean and reinstalling some things, it looks pretty ominous. We kept getting the warning message that something was wrong.

The saddest thing is that a lot of things I never thought about copying are gone forever in the purge. It was an extreme house cleaning.

Then when I tried to get back into my email account, I could no longer remember the password and could not find where it was written down. A very nice gal at the tech support place gave me a new password that I have now written down and will keep in a secure place.

The next thing will be to go out and buy a new hard drive so Caleb can come back and install it, hopefully before the big crash.

In the meantime, granddaughter Kristine is coming to the end of her visit here with us for an entire week. For the most part it has been quite enjoyable. She has benefited from being able to eat her favorite foods of broccoli-cheese-noodle soup, mac and cheese and poppyseed bread.

I have baked poppyseed bread twice -- mostly because The Man of the House keeps getting into it at all hours of the day and night. I may need to hide it. The next thing that will happen is that he will complain that he's put on a couple of pounds!

If you would like to make this tempting bread, here is the recipe. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare two 8-inch loaf pans.

In a large bowl, beat together three eggs, 2 1/4 cups sugar, 1 1/2 cups canola oil and 1 1/2 cups milk. In a medium bowl, mix together 3 cups flour, and 1 1/2 teaspoons each of baking soda and salt. Gradually beat this into the wet mixture.

Stir in 1 1/2 tablespoons poppy seeds and 2 teaspoons almond extract. Divide this into the two pans and bake one hour or until a pick comes out clean.

In the meantime, in a small bowl prepare the orange glaze by mixing 1/4 cup orange juice concentrate, 3/4 cup confectioners' sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 teaspoon almond extract.

After taking the bread from the oven, allow to cool 10 minutes in the pan. Remove and glaze while still warm. Let bread cool. It is actually better the next day if you can keep people away from it that long. It can be frozen or refrigerated.

Getting back to Kristine's visit, we took her to Burger King one night to give us both a big treat. We also took her to Howard's, our favorite Saturday morning restaurant, for breakfast.

She has spent hours watching the Disney Channel and we have managed to get in several movies between the ones we got at the library and some we have here. The people who transport her to her day center have been able to find us here at Del Webb, some easier than others. Her pickup time has been anywhere from 8 to 8:45 a.m., even though she is ready and waiting by 7:30 a.m. The evenings have been just as varied for her arrival home.

It has been a good visit for all of us, and a great vacation for her parents to get away.
