MILLERSBURG -- A Millersburg man on Jan. 4 appeared in court on criminal charges he assaulted and threatened another man in February.

Jan Matthew Becker, 28, of 4673 County Road 400, is charged in Holmes County Municipal Court with menacing and assault.

On Wednesday, Becker asked for a continuance, which would afford him time to consult with an attorney. He next must appear on Jan. 17. If convicted, Becker faces up to 210 days in jail.

The charges stem from a Feb. 19 incident at a South Washington Street business. That's where Becker reportedly shoved and verbally threatened a 24-year-old man, according to Millersburg Police Patrolman Jeff Lay.

The victim reported the incident to Millersburg Police, said Lay, explaining the incident was apparently prompted by a disagreement over the sale of a vehicle by the victim to a member of Becker's family.

Security footage and witness statements corroborate the victim's claims, according to Lay. And, while officers were unable to locate Becker at the time, in November, he admitted to officers from the Loudonville Police Department he did have contact with the victim.

Becker, arrested on Sunday, was released from the Holmes County Jail on his own recognizance. As a condition of his bond, he is prohibited from having any contact with the victim.
