MILLERSBURG -- The Holmes County Agriculture Society voted to accept the $1.885 million bid of Ivan Weaver Construction for general contractor for the construction of the new arena building at Harvest Ridge.
The 48,000-square-foot building will be the same color as the livestock building, and the lower roof and trim will be a hunter green color, similar to the Baker Building.
"We opened the bid at the last meeting, and the Harvest Ridge Board met the week following, and it is our recommendation that we go ahead and sign with Ivan Weaver Construction," said Harvest Ridge Board President and Fair Board Secretary Tara Sheldon.
The bid along with other bids have been presented to Michael Lehman to check for inconsistencies. No major issues were found, Sheldon reported.
"The plan is still to have the building usable under temporary occupancy by fair time," Fair Board President Kerry Taylor said. "A lot depends on when they get started and how the spring is (weather-wise)."
In other business, the grandstand is approximately 75 to 80 percent complete. They are waiting on additional material to be delivered from Florida. The crew will return once the material is on the grounds.
"They are out of walk boards. Therefore, they can't put any more seats on," Taylor said. "They are waiting on the material to be delivered from Florida.
The original plan was $175,000 for the grandstands; $85,000 for material; and the remainder for installation. Taylor explained the fabrication work has cost much more than originally anticipated and current expenses are already exceeding the total for the complete installation. Taylor will be talking to Benny Godwin of Southeast Crane & Equipment about current expenses and expectations for completion.
In other business, there is a funding opportunity of up to $250,000, if it can be matched dollar for dollar. "This is an anonymous pledge, and we are starting to diligently work on raising the match challenge dollars to that," Taylor said. "Hopefully we can parlay that into $500,000. It's a wonderful opportunity for us. More details will be forthcoming."
