BERLIN TWP. -- No students were involved in a Friday, Feb. 24, collision involving a pickup truck and a school bus.

However, the driver of the 1999 Ford F-150 pickup, Jaquelin J. Jackna, 69, County Road 25, Warsaw, sustained head injuries and was flown from the scene via emergency helicopter to Summa Akron City Hospital, said Chief Deputy Richard Haun of the Holmes County Sheriff's Office.

Her passenger, Jeffrey Jackna, 73, same address, was transported by an East Holmes Fire and EMS Co. squad to Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg.

At 3:33 p.m., Jaquelin Jackna was eastbound on U.S. route 62, stopped to turn left onto County Road 201 and was struck from behind by an eastbound 2008 Bluebird school bus, driven by Ella A. Shoup, 71, of state Route 515, Dundee.

The bus is owned by the East Holmes Local School District, but there were no students on the bus at the time of the crash, Haun said.

The collision caused the pickup to spin around in the eastbound lane before coming to rest in the south berm of the road.

"It is bad enough we had to have an on-site landing of (an emergency helicopter)," Haun said. "We're fortunate. It could have been a lost worse if there were students involved."

Both roads were closed at the intersection for about an hour, according to Haun.

All involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Alcohol and drug involvement is not suspected, said Haun, noting the sheriff's office continues to investigate. He anticipates Shoup will be cited for failing to maintain an assured clear distance ahead.
