MILLERSBURG -- The Millersburg Rotary Club will be hosting a 5K and 10K "Run Because You Can" race on Saturday, May 20, to benefit the Holmes County District Public Library and Rotary International's Polio Plus.
The race will be run along the Holmes County Trail, a flat, paved bike trail, starting and ending at Hipp Station Depot in Millersburg, at 1 Trail Drive in Millersburg.
"We're hopping to have around 100 runners," said Rotary President Gabe Aufrance. "We had about 90 two years ago, but last year it rained all day and we only had about 70 runners."
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with the races starting at 8:30 and an awards presentation at 9:30.
Aufrance hopes the race will generate around $5,000 for the library's new bookmobile fund and also benefits Rotary's Polio Plus campaign.
Last year, the race raised money for furniture for the Crissey Memorial Pool.
The top male and female overall award for first place in both races receives a $50 gift card, a Big Cheese medal and a wooden Rotary medal. The Masters (age 40 and older) winners receive a $25 gift card plus a wooden Rotary medal.
Medals will also be presented to first-, second- and third-place finishers in age groups 19-under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and over.
Aufrance says runners enjoy competing in the Rotary 5K and 10K races because the course is flat and fast, as well as scenic, along the Holmes County Trail.
Online registrations are under way now at www.ohioraceday.com. Runners may also pick up a paper registration form at the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce, Holmes County Education Foundation, First Knox National Bank, Holmes County District Public Library or the Holmes County Park District.
Pre-registration costs $28 for the 5K race and $33 for the 10K race and guarantees a T-shirt. The day of the race, the 5K race is $35 and the 10K is $40.
Library Executive Director Bill Martino says he and other volunteers will be on hand at the race to help register runners and to talk with people about the new bookmobile. Martino appreciates the support of Rotary.
