Holmes County sports roundup One goal wins grudge game for West HolmesSeptember 2, 2010
The following is a wrapup of West Holmes and Hiland varsity events for the week of Aug. 17-23. GIRLS SOCCER Monday, Aug. 23 West Holmes 1, Triway 0 With just under 20 minutes left in regulation, this grudge match meet ing of backyard rivals reached a breaking point. Jordan Buchanan, a West Holmes forward, drew a foul just outside Triway's 18-yard box on a Titan defender. That set up a free kick and Knights coach Josh Wengerd elected to have freshman Abby Callahan take the shot. The ninth-grader put her toe to the ball and delivered the backbreaker for Triway with a perfectly placed shot to the left upper corner of the goal box. The ball slipped past a jumping Titan goalkeeper Mariah Cruise (four saves) for the game's only goal. "We had plenty of chances," said Wengerd. "We possessed the ball a lot tonight, for some odd reason we just couldn't get one to go until Callahan buried her shot." Making that goal stand was sophomore netminder Shelby Harris, who was making her debut between the pipes replacing graduated standout Ayla Uhl. Harris was quick on her feet all night as she thwarted several Titan rallies by coming off her line and at other times trusting her defense to sweep it away. "Shelby is a very good keeper," said Wengerd. "Tonight, she did a great job with the limited chances she had to make plays and really seems to be settling in." BOYS SOCCER Monday, Aug. 23 Tuscarawas Valley 1 It was opening night for Hiland, but the reality was it all belonged to forward Braden Conn. The Hawks' offensive player finished with a hat trick as Hiland roughed up Tuscarawas Valley. Conn scored twice in the first half and capped his big evening with his final scoring strike with just six minutes left in regulation. Hiland finished off the Trojans with a 25-3 shot advantage and a decisive 14-2 edge in corners. Others scoring for the Hawks were Luke Burch, Noah Boyd, Alex Schmucker and Cody Miller, while Dylan Kaufman finished with two saves between the pipes. Comments
