By KEVIN LYNCH Staff Writer The opening chapter of the Kevin Maltarich book at West Holmes did not go as the coach had hoped in his return to his alma mater, but is one that leaves readers thinking things are only going to get better as they continue to turn the pages. The Triway Titans unleashed an awesome aerial attack on the young Knights, bombing West Holmes 48-6. "We're just going to pick up the pieces and get better tomorrow morning," Maltarich said following last Friday's loss. "That's the only thing we can do right now. "(Triway quarterback Derek) Carmichael was right on the money and those kids were catching everything in sight," the coach continued. "They executed well. They're going to have a successful season." Carmichael, the Titans' senior, completed 13-of-18 passes for 284 yards, including an 85-yard slant to Kyle Maxwell on the second offensive play of the game for a score. Carmichael to Maxwell was the winning combo on the extra point pass as well, giving Triway an 8-0 lead at the 8:25 mark of the first period. After a three-plays-and-punt performance by the Knights, Triway marched 48 yards in nine plays, with Carmichael carrying it in for six from the 1. A pass to Marcus Bertsch for the two-point conversion gave Triway a 16-0 lead. "It's like I told those kids, when we watch film, it's not going to be a matter of how bad we played, but how well Triway played," Maltarich said. "They were a team on a mission tonight. Their seniors have been there and done that before, and they came out and they executed." Mission accomplished for the Titans. Triway went up 24-0 on a Carmichael-to-Sawyer Polen 45-yard scoring strike, and the two-point conversion pass to Kyle Kearney. The Titans went up 30-0 with less than a minute remaining in the opening half, as Carmichael connected with Polen again on a 14-yard touchdown toss. With a team centering on the ground game, the Knights were not in any position to play catchup when they fell so far behind. "Not yet, but we'll get there," Maltarich said. "I think (Travis) Carter and (Garrett) Mackey give us a nice one-two punch at fullback," Maltarich said. "You got an older, bruiser type kid (Carter) and a younger kid (Mackey) that is skilled. They both bring a couple different things to the table. "It's just like Barry Phillips coming in for Mason James at running back. We don't miss a beat," the coach continued. "I'm comfortable bringing in any of the starters or kids behind them. We prepare all those kids to play." The combination of Carter and Mackey rushed for 113 yards on 17 carries. Carter scored the Knights' lone touchdown on a 20-yard rumble up the middle to make the score 42-6 with 9:27 remaining in the game. That score capped off a 13-play, 72-yard drive by the Knights. West Holmes will have its hands full in week two, as the Knights host River View, coming off a 34-20 triumph over West Muksingum. Sophomore quarterback John Brillhart led the River View attack, throwing a pair of touchdown passes to Austin Guthrie. Guthrie snared six passes in all for 76 yards. Running back Jordan Bradford piled up 91 yards on 15 carries to lead the Black Bears. Comments
