West Holmes girls soccer coach Josh Wengerd looks to improve on last year's seven-win season. The way the team has played through its first two games of 2010, it appears as though the Knights are well on their way.

West Holmes fell 2-0 on Thursday, Aug. 24, at Madison, but played the Rams tough until the end.

"We were right there," Wengerd said. "I told the girls this game would be a measuring stick for us. We learned a few things, and now we've got to go home and work on them."

Wengerd is pleased with the number of skilled young players on his squad.

"We are younger, with only four seniors on our squad," the coach said. "However, we have a strong group of juniors, many with varsity experience. I think we will be able to possess the ball more this year and not be so overworked in the midfield."

West Holmes blanked Triway 1-0 in the opener, getting a goal from freshman Abby Callahan.

Wengerd expects the team to be stronger on defense this season, despite losing four-year starter in goal Ayla Uhl to graduation.

"Ayla had to graduate, but we have a terrific sophomore, Shelby Harris, ready to fill those big shoes," Wengerd said. "I think our defense will be a bit stouter this year. We may rely on our defense to keep us in some games this year."

Junior Amy Boyd, senior Lara Henry and sophomore Courtney Kozak are back on defense, along with promising freshman Alexis Rolince.

Junior Schuyler Jones is the leading scorer back on offense, and will be helped by the addition of Callahan and the return of junior forward Brynley Conway. Rebecca Chamberlin and Celeste Parsons are also expected to contribute offensively.

Wengerd said his troops need to work on closing out on the goal, and on first touches.
