Jeanette Carol Hummel, 86, of Millersburg, passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at her home after a short illness.
She was born Feb. 13, 1926, in Glenmont, the daughter of Benjamin and Katherine (Jones) Schopfer, and married Dr. Dean L. Hummel on Sept. 15, 1946. He survives.
Jeanette was a graduate of Millersburg High School and a student at Oberlin College. She earned both bachelor's and master's degrees at Ohio University and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies at Virginia Tech. She served on the faculty at Virginia Tech for many years as a lecturer and director of the Virginia Head Start Program, retiring in 1994.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Jeanette was a constant companion and supporter of her husband, and together they served as educational consultants in Malaysia, Chile, Venezuela, and the U.S. DOD in Europe.
Jeanette was admired and loved by her family, friends, and students. She was kind and patient, and always gave more than she received.
Surviving in addition to her husband of 67 years, are children, Gretchen Hummel of Columbus, and Eric (Jackie Summerfield) Hummel of Saratoga, Calif.; a granddaughter, Kristen (Craig) Addonizio of St. Louis Park, Minn., and a sister-in-law, Joyce Schopfer of Cincinnati.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ben and her mother, Kate; a brother, Aaron Schopfer; and in 1969 by a 12-year-old daughter, Krista.
Celebration of Life service was Tuesday, Jan. 22 at Berlin Mennonite Church, with Beau Hummel officiating.
Arrangements were handled by Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg.
