CRESTON -- Alfred L. Patterson, 97, of Creston, died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017 at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster after celebrating Christmas with his family just one week before.
Al was born Oct. 1, 1919 in Clark to the late Roy and Nellie (Bechtol) Patterson and served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-45, having been stationed in New Finland. On March 9, 1945, he married the former Lucille Uhl. She preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 2002.
Al had made his home in the Creston area since 1945 and retired from the Packaging Corporation of America in Rittman in 1981. He later helped his daughter and son-in-law with their farm operation until he was nearly 90, was a member of the Creston Presbyterian Church and had been an avid bowler over the years.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Ed Gasser of Sterling; daughter-in-law, Rita Patterson of Wooster; grandsons and their wives, Chad and Sandy Gasser of Rittman, Kevin and Sonya Gasser of Staunton, Virginia and Brian and Cassandra Gasser of Sterling; great-grandchildren, Matthew McClain, Christie Groah, Paxton, Hadley, Max and Grace Gasser; great-great-granddaughter, Audriana Grace; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dean Patterson of Coshocton, Herbert and Norita Patterson of Creston and Ron and Helen Patterson of Millersburg; sister, Bernice Dreher of Coshocton; sister-in-law, Vivian Uhl VanHouton of Flagstaff, Arizona; life-long friend, Ivadell Schar of Creston; his dear neighbor and friend, Christine Von Bergen and her family of Creston, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Larry Patterson in 1984; granddaughter, Lisa Raper; sister, Marjorie Patterson and brothers, Don and George Patterson.
Services were Saturday, Jan. 7 at Murray Funeral Home in Creston. Burial was in Jackson Cemetery. Tributes may be shared at www.Murray-Funeral-Home.com.
