MILLERSBURG -- Karen McDowell Fair, 78, of Millersburg, passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017 at Pomerene Hospital, Millersburg, with her husband by her side, following an extended illness.
Karen was born Nov. 6, 1938 in Glenmont, the daughter of TR Roosevelt "Steve" and Coralee (Niederhouser) Mitchhart. She was a 1956 graduate of Glenmont High School, where she was a cheerleader and was named salutatorian of her graduating class.
Karen was married 40 years to Walter "Parkie" McDowell and he preceded her in death in 1996. On Dec. 4, 1999 she married Tim Fair and he survives.
Karen was a lifelong member of the Catholic Community of Holmes County, SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Glenmont and also St. Peter Catholic Church in Millersburg.
Karen was a study hall monitor for 30 years at West Holmes Junior High. She worked many years at the Holmes County Training Center, was on the board and helped raise funding. After the death of her daughter, Mary Ann, she was an active participant in the March of Dimes.
Karen loved her garden, her dogs and rescued many animals over the years. She enjoyed gardening, embroidery, sewing, reading and traveling. Karen and her daughter, Coralee, both taught swimming lessons through the Red Cross. Karen was the most loving mother a child could have. She was generous and kind and will be greatly missed.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Tim are daughter, Coralee McDowell of Millersburg and son, Stacy (Jill) McDowell of Telford, Pa.; step-children, Holly Fair of Wooster, Daryn (Terri) Fair of Indianapolis, Ind. and Bryan (Sarah) Fair of Marysville; grandchildren, Daniel and Drew McDowell, George, Becca, Natalie, Mollie and Andrew Fair and Zach Barrett; nieces, Sandy Bolen and Brenda Reed Staples; and nephew, Larry Crawford.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Parkie; her sister, Judith Ann Crawford; and daughter, Mary Ann McDowell.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 14, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Glenmont, 139 Main St., with Father Stephen L Krile officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
