Honeytown to play bluegrass and folk music

The local folk band Honeytown will present a community concert on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Oak Grove Mennonite Church in Smithville. Four local musicians form a bluegrass and folk band -- with a variety of other music styles -- that is sure to delight with folk tunes, original compositions, rock and even some a capella music.

There is no admission charge; a free-will offering will be received and proceeds above expenses will benefit the Habitat House Project that Oak Grove has supported this summer. The concert may be held outdoors, so guests may want to take lawn chairs.

The upbeat music group began in 2007 with three teachers at Central Christian School. The band is comprised of Tim Shue, director of music at Central Christian; Nate Gundy, who plays guitar and teaches English and coaches soccer at Central; Kevin Himes, who plays piano and percussion, and is pastor of Salem Mennonite Church, Kidron; Toby Hazlett of Millersburg, who teaches studio classes in stringed instruments.

Enjoy Fall Gospel Celebration

The seventh annual Fall Country Gospel Music Celebration will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Berlin Christian Fellowship Church starting at 6 p.m.

There is a long list of great entertainers featuring Marlin and Laurel Wagler from Indiana who do a country-style of Gospel with a lot of down-home family type of songs.

Also performing will be Dave and Lee Swartzentruber who are continuing the local tradition of good, two-part harmony. Floyd Mullet with Servant's Heart will do a tribute to Johnny Schrock and an addition to the concert is Liberated, from Mount Hope with Southern Gospel style music.

Brand new to the show this year is 39 West, with lead singer Paul Malanga from Burbank. Malanga is a worship leader at his home church and has been singing his whole life. Local musicians in the band include Bob Kraus, Don VanFossen and Aden Miller who said "We do traditional gospel and country music such as 'Ring of Fire.'"

There is no admission fee but a freewill offering will be taken to help support this annual event.
